What is productivity?

In this post, let's take a look at the concept of productivity.

Here's my personal definition of productivity:

Productivity = value/time
(productivity equals value divided by time)

By this definition, there are two main ways to increase productivity:
1) Increase the value created
2) Decrease the time required to create this value

You can complicate this definition by including other factors, such as energy and resources, but I prefer the simplicity of time because, in most cases, factors such as energy and resources are reducible to time in any way. Time also makes it very easy to compare different levels of productivity, such as hourly or daily production.

Apparently you can make some significant gains on the time side. There are many personal productivity optimizations that, especially if you introduce them into your youth, will produce a huge net of time savings throughout your life. Consider your typing speed, for example. If you invest time to increase your speed by up to 90 words per minute or faster, the initial time investment will be worth a lot if you make a lot of typing throughout your life, compared to allowing your speed to take 50 ppm or slower year to Post-year. The overtime of practice will be nothing compared to the time you save by typing emails, letters or blog entries in the coming decades. Other time-based optimizations include improving your sleep habits, minimizing travel time, or abandoning habits that waste time, such as smoking.

The main limit of time-based optimizations is that the optimization process requires an input of time itself. It takes time to save time. Therefore, the longer you invest in optimizing the use of time, the higher your initial investment will be in time and the greater your need for a long-term payment to justify that investment. This limit creates an upper limit for any time-based optimization you try, according to the law of decreasing returns. The longer you invest in any optimization attempt, the lower your net return, everything else being equal.

This law of diminishing returns points us back to the value side. While we may be trapped in decreasing returns trying to optimize only the side of time, we may notice that working to optimize the value side is less limiting and more open.

What is the "value" in our productivity equation?

The value is a quality that you must define by yourself. Therefore, any definition of productivity is relative to the value definition. In circles where people can agree to a common definition of value, they can also agree to a common definition of productivity. However, in terms of your personal productivity, you are not obligated to set value in the same way that anyone else would. You are free to adopt your own definition, so that your quest for greater productivity becomes a personal search that produces the value that matters most to you.

We often adopt a socially conditioned definition of value that tends to be very limiting. Perhaps we define value in terms of production work within our careers, number of completed tasks, number and quality of important projects completed, etc. You may not be able to verbalize it clearly, but you may have a functional definition of value that feels comfortable to you. You can tell when you had a productive day and when you didn't based on how much value you created, according to your own sense of value.

But how much conscious thought did you put in your personal definition of value? I will challenge you to reflect a little more about your definition, which will consequently redefine your sense of productivity.

Impact
First, according to your value definition, to what extent is the value provided? Who gets the value? You, your boss, your coworkers, your friends, your family, your company, your clients, your team, certain investors, your community, your country, the world, your family, God, all sentient beings, etc.? What degree of value is finally received by each person or group? Are you providing value to one person, 10 people, 100 people, 1000 people, millions of people, the whole planet? How much do you feel the value you provide beyond those you provide directly? How quickly do these ripactions dissipate? What is your sense of the basic level of impact of your value? Is it limited or expansive?

For example, if you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 corporation or a country leader, you will have much more capacity to provide value to a large number of people than to work as a janitor. The more people you can influence, the higher your potential value will be. Greater leverage means greater potential impact.

Resistance
Secondly, how long does it last the amount you create? 1 hour, one day, one week, one month, one year, one decade, One life, 100 years, 1000 years, 10,000 years, until the end of time? To what extent does its value take forward in time? Is it quickly consumed and forgotten? Or does it continue to regenerate year after year? Does your value create ripactions in time?

The Mona Lisa is still providing value hundreds of years after its creation. But other artworks do not provide any lasting value beyond the life time of the artist. They are quickly abandoned and eventually replaced.

Essence
Thirdly, what is the essence of the value you produce? Do you help people survive? Entertain them? Enlighten them? How much do others value what you produce? What price would they be willing to pay for it? Do they consider their essential, optional, or undesirable value? How unique is its value? Are you the only one who can provide it or are there many equivalent options?

The essence of the value provided by a caretaker is low, because it is easy to find people to do this job for little payment. The essence of a physicist's value is potentially enormous because a new theoretical concept could produce a more accurate understanding of the universe.

Volume
Finally, what is the amount of value you create? How much are you spending in a certain period of time? How much do you produce that amount?

For example, Picasso was a prolific artist who created hundreds of different works throughout his life. Other artists had a much smaller volume of production.

So now we have this little formula:

Value = impact x resistance x Essence x Volume

And so:

Productivity = impact x Resistance x Essence x Volume/Time

Now, what's interesting here is that most of the literature on productivity I've read focuses almost exclusively on volume and time. But these are the most limiting parts of this equation. However, they are also the easiest to write.

I think the most important long-term factors to be considered when optimizing productivity (whether an individual, corporation, country or other entity) are impact, endurance, and essence. And the most important of these three is the essence.

For example, let's consider the productivity of a blogger.

The impact of a blogger's value would be related to the levels of blog traffic and the overall influence among its readers. How many people are reading the blog and how much value does the blogger write? To improve the impact, a blogger can increase traffic to the blog or improve his writing skills in order to have a deeper effect on the readers. The impact can also be increased if readers leave and tell others about what they have read. In addition, the blogger could use the blog as a means of exploration, thus increasing the impact of the blog in the life of the blogger himself.

The durability of a blogger's value would be the long-term effect on the readers of the blog, if any. is the blog changing the long-term thinking and behavior patterns of its readers? Do readers quickly forget what they read on the blog or what information remains with them? Are the readers permanently haunted by what they read?

The essence of a blogger's value depends on the topics on which the blogger writes. Is the blogger writing disposable posts to give a laugh or generate traffic, or is there a serious commitment to providing deep value? What is the nature of the blogger's value delivery? Is it a financial advice that could help a person become rich? Does it provide solutions to important issues? Or is it mostly fluff?

And of course, the volume of a blogger's value would be the amount of words and posts that the blogger offers.

Now, extend this line of thought to your life as a whole, well beyond the boundaries of your career.

What is the ultimate impact of your life? How many lives are you playing? Are you a person of influence? Or do you exist in relative obscurity?

What will be the strength of the value of your life? Will your lifelong contributions be largely insignificant? Or will your contributions be stirring for centuries? Which of its value will survive its own death? What is your value, you will have the potential to retain after dying (assuming there is a sort of life after death)?

And finally, what will be the essence of the value of your life? What is the heart of your contribution? Are you here to play follow the follower? Are you looking for a worthwhile destination? When you consciously consider the value you are supplying, do you feel empty and fearful or peaceful and accomplished? What is the meaning behind your actions? Was that meaning consciously chosen?

You cannot optimize your productivity without consciously and deliberately optimizing these factors. Real productivity is much more than volume/time. If you neglect the importance of impact, endurance and essence, you will condemn yourself to the quest to spin your wheels faster and quicker and lose all the meaning of life. And the worst part is, as you live, you'll know that's true. You will feel emptiness and emptiness in everything you do. When you consider your output in the light of the infinity of time and space, it becomes nothing.

Essence is the most important factor. Until you discover the true essence of your life, you can never really be productive. You can be sure that any task performed will have a nonzero impact, resistance, and volume. These factors can be very small if the task is trivial, but they will be greater than zero. However, if the essence of any task is zero, its total productivity will be zero. If you lose the point of your life, your final productivity is zero, no matter how much you work and how well you try to optimize all other factors. If you win the whole world and lose your soul, your final payout is zero.

That essence is your purpose.

That's why it's so important to discover the purpose of your life. No matter how long it takes. In fact, the only really productive task that you can perform before you know its purpose is to work to find out what that purpose is. The search for essence is essential if you want to have a non-zero productivity.

After discovering its essence, you will discover that all of these other factors begin to optimize very easily. Embracing the essence creates passion and passion increases impact, endurance and volume. Passion also makes time seem to pass slower. Passion provides energy and attracts resources to manage time more efficiently. Passion allows you to see the present moment as inherently complete and perfect, rather than realizing life as incomplete and imperfect. The discovery of essence automatically optimizes productivity as a whole.

Find a person who knows and embraces the purpose of your life and you will find a truly productive person. But, in the absence of purpose, you will find occupation, but never productivity-the output volume created can also be played in the Recycle Bin. You will have no power to endure.

The purpose is rooted in the permanent, timeless, unlimited. It's the essence of what's real. The purpose is conscious and alive. Out of purpose, you can work only with the temporary, over time, with the limited-with the phantom projections of reality, but not with reality itself.
